The speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo has said that the development of sports is everybody’s responsibility.

Oluomo who was a guest speaker at the opening ceremony and Lecture of the 2021 Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter week, spoke through his representative, Ogbeni Kola Ishola.

Oluomo said that all hands must be on deck to ensure sports development in the state and the country at large.

While speaking on the theme “Quality Legislation Towards A Sustainable Sports Policy in Nigeria”, he said that the nation needs a solid sports policy.

In his words, “Quality legislation has to be sustainable to be able to adapt to what is already on ground. Sports has Stakeholders like athletes, administrators, writers (Journalists), sports associations, and International federations.

“For Ogun State House of Assembly, the norm is to adopt the bottom-top approach. SWAN can locate an area of concern and take it to the house via a member of the House of Assembly. Quality legislation, implementation, maintenance of sports facilities, and the Nigerian factor are different things altogether. With all hands on deck, sports development will be a reality in Ogun State and Nigeria.”

“The theme of this year is well thought, coming at a time that most sports enthusiasts believe the nation needs a solid sports policy to serve as a Bible if indeed we are serious about redeeming our shaky and fading sports sector. The Ogun State Chapter of SWAN has remained, one of the few vibrant chapters despite numerous challenges and efforts in some quarters to pull it down. Our members have remained resolute and have been forging ahead as a united body despite efforts of outside forces to discredit us and cause disaffection among others.

“Together we have been able to create Ogun SWAN Estate, regular SWAN Forum, organisation of table tennis Competition among members, provision of palliative for members during the critical period of COVID-19 pandemic, and refurbishment of SWAN Secretariat. We have also mapped out programs like Ogun/SWAN Speakers Cup, Ogun SWAN Security and Safety Cup, Ogun SWAN/Opulent 5-Aside media Cup, and organization of a sports summit to fashion a way of improving the dwindling sports fortune in Ogun State,” Akintunde said.
